中國政府一直大力推行義務(wù)教育（compulsory education)，以使每個兒童都享有受教育的機會。自1986年《義務(wù)教育法》生效以來，經(jīng)過不懈努力，實現(xiàn)了在全國推行義務(wù)教育的目標。如今，在中國，兒童年滿六周歲開始上小學(xué)，從小學(xué)到初中一共接受九年義務(wù)教育。從2008年秋季學(xué)期開始，義務(wù)教育階段學(xué)生無需激納學(xué)費。隨著一系列教育改革舉措的實施，中國義務(wù)教育的質(zhì)量也有顯著提高。

The Chinese government has been vigorously promoting compulsory education to ensure that every child has the opportunity to receive an education. Since the "Compulsory Education Law" was enacted in 1986, after unremitting efforts, the goal of implementing compulsory education across the country has been achieved. Nowadays, in China, children start primary school at the age of six and receive nine years of compulsory education from primary school to junior high school. Since the fall semester of 2008, students in the compulsory education stage no longer need to pay tuition fees. With the implementation of a series of educational reform measures, the quality of compulsory education in China has also significantly improved.
